Abstract

Introduction. Visuomotor coordination is an essential skill in children’s psychomotor development. It refers to
the ability to coordinate eye movements with hand and finger movements. This skill is fundamental for performing
tasks that require precision and control, such as writing. The proper development of eye-hand coordination
contributes to a child’s ability to explore and learn about the environment, communicate ideas, and express themselves.
The aim of this study was to determine whether there is an association between eye-hand coordination and
pre-writing skills in children aged 5 to 6 years in Libertador San Martín.
Methods. This study was conducted in Libertador San Martín using an observational, analytical, cross-sectional
design, including a total of 90 children aged 5 to 6 years. Sixteen participants attended preschool level (4-year-old
classroom), 28 attended kindergarten (5-year-old classroom), and 36 were in first grade. Visuomotor coordination
was assessed using the Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test and the Koppitz scoring system. Pre-writing skills were
evaluated using the Ferreiro and Teberosky writing test.
Results. A statistically significant association was found between visuomotor coordination age and pre-writing
skills (χ²=75.66; p=0.001). A statistically significant association was also observed between educational level
and visuomotor coordination (χ²=49.96; p=0.001), as well as between educational level and pre-writing skills
(χ²=57.01; p=0.001). Additionally, a statistically significant relationship was found between sex and pre-writing
skills (χ²=10.62; p=.031).
Conclusions. There is an association between visuomotor coordination and pre-writing skills in children aged 5
and 6 years in Libertador San Martín, Entre Ríos.
