AbstractThe archaeology and history of ancient Qatna (= Tell Mishrife) in Syria has been rather obscure over the past 75 years after the initial excavations by Robert du Mesnil du Buisson between 1926-1929. However, the situation changed dramatically in September 2002 when an international archaeological expedition discovered an archive containing 63 tablets written in cuneiform and dating between 1400-1350 BC. The discovery provides a good backdrop to revisit the geography, archaeology and history of Qatna. This study firstly provides a description of the recent discovery, followed by a discussion of the geography, topography and archaeology of Tell Mishrife. A tentative history of Qatna, beginning in the Early Bronze Age (c. 2500-2000 BC) will be attempted after this. Finally, a brief evaluation of the region as a whole is undertaken in the context of the center-periphery model. It is suggested that both archaeological and historical studies are presently undergoing a dramatic change and are focusing more and more upon the periphery (instead of an exclusive focus upon the centers such as Egypt and Mesopotamia), which promises a significant methodological change.
