Endodontics — Final restoration — Temporary restoration — Direct restoration — Indirect restorationAbstract
Introduction. Endodontic success is directly related to the quality of the root canal treatment and the final restoration, as well as to the absence of signs and symptoms. It has been demonstrated that the application of an incorrect protocol for the final restoration after endodontic treatment may lead to failure due to the leakage of microorganisms and byproducts from the oral cavity into the apical portion of the root. The principal aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of dental pieces that received direct and indirect restorations following endodontic treatment in a university dental center during the period from 2021 to 2024.
Materials and methods. This was an observational, descriptive, and retrospective study. Clinical records and radiographs of patients treated at the university dental center of the Universidad Adventista del Plata by students of the Endodontics Deparment were evaluated for the period 2021-2024.
Results. A total of 57.5% of the treatments corresponded to definitive restorations, while 42.5% were provisional.
Among the latter, the most frequent type was direct restoration (41.1%). In cases involving indirect restorations,
the most common type of prior restoration was the direct provisional (10.2%).
Conclusions. The prevalence of definitive restorations following endodontic treatment was high. Addressing this issue is considered crucial by promoting comprehensive and effective practices to ensure the success of endodontic treatment.
