Vitamin D — Curitiba — Hypovitaminosis — Brazil — PrevalenceAbstract
Introduction. Vitamin D has recently gained ground due to its essential role in various physiological processes in
the human body. Its deficiency is a growing global concern, as studies conducted in different countries have shown
a decrease in vitamin D levels, attributed to lifestyle changes worldwide. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency in a specific population group in Curitiba.
Methodology. This was an observational, descriptive, and retrospective study. A non-probability convenience sampling method was used. The sample consisted of 845 patients, aged between 25 and 60 years, who attended a private clinic in Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil. The analyzed data included age, sex, and serum vitamin D levels, which were collected from the clinic’s electronic health records (EHR).
Results. Of the 845 patients, 400 (47.3%) had insufficient vitamin D levels, 178 (21.1%) had deficient levels, and
267 (31.6%) had levels within the normal range. No statistically significant association was found between vitamin D levels and either sex or age.
Conclusion. It is concluded that the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency was high among patients
who underwent check-up examinations at a private clinic in Curitiba between 2018 and 2024.
