In this paper, the author addresses the question of the importance of religious freedom. The work develops briefly why religious freedom and freedom of conscience should be a matter of interest for both religious people, as well as for those who are not interested in religion. In this sense, three arguments in defense of the importance of the religious freedom of all individuals are offered. In the first place, it is addressed the role of religious freedom as a historical foundation for constitutional, political, civil and human rights. Without freedom of religion and belief, all the human rights project can collapse under its weight. Secondly, it is stated that the freedom of religion and belief is necessary to resist statism and other monistic visions of state power. Finally, in the third place, the author suggests that we may not have the intellectual, political or rhetorical resources needed to defend conscience if we do not respect and protect the freedom of religion and convictions.Downloads
