AbstractThe reform carried out by Akhenaten (Amenophis IV) implied the development of a more universal idea of the sun, and was the outcome of a process of centralization initiated by Amenophis III. This paper aims to demonstrate: (1) that Akhenaten knew how to use the traditional mechanisms of government, such as diplomacy, military expeditions, the building of a new residence (Akhetaten), the presentation of the king as a warrior, the celebration of festivals and rituals; (2) that his power was also based on new ways of control by enhancing the majesty of the king through his identification with the god Aten; and (3) the relation between the concept of the solar disk (Aten) as symbol of the universal lordship of the Pharaoh and the development of the idea of imperialism.
